Everyday Human Foods That Could Be Harming Your Dog

My dog loves food. Especially food that is not in her food bowl. If I'm eating something, she wants it. She'll try anything. However, did you know that there are many common foods that we eat regularly that can be harmful, even toxic to your dog? Here's a quick list of some of them for you: 

• Chocolate- Okay, most of us know about this one, but I thought I'd better include it anyway. Dogs, just like humans often have a sweet tooth, but it's the caffeine and theobromine that can spell big trouble for dogs.
  

• Garlic and Onions: On top of stinky breath (no one wants a dog with garlic and onion breath!), these veggies are actually toxic for your dog. Apparently raw onions and garlic are even worse than cooked ones. Apparently it can take a few days to show its affects as well. Warning signs in your dog include dark red or orange urine and lethargy. 
  

• Avocado: This one was a complete shocker to me. How can one of my "super foods" that can be  so good for me, be so harmful to my dog? Apparently the entire avocado tree is poisonous to dogs (not just the fruit). The only good news about this is that your dog would have to eat a lot of this fruit to harm them. Next time you eat an avo please be careful where you put your pit as well. The size of the pit could easily lodge in most dog's throats causing them to choke.
  
   

• Corn on the Cob: On top of it having virtually no nutritional value for your dog, little bits of corn can get caught in their intestine causing serious complications. 
  

• Dairy: Believe it or not, most dogs are actually lactose intolerant (meaning that dairy bothers their stomach). A little bit here and there is okay, but if you feed your dog a lot of cheese be prepared for a runny tummy. 
  

• Raw Salmon: Most dogs love seafood, but certain fish should only be fed to your dog if it's cooked. Raw salmon can actually cause Salmon Poisoning Disease. 
  

As much as we like to treat our furry friends with  a human treat now and then, please double check that what you are giving them is not actually harming them. To be on the safe side, stick to designated dog treats from your local pet store.
