Saying Goodbye

This post is dedicated to my dear friend Kelly who lost her angel Leeto last week.

It's never easy to say goodbye to a pet. Whether they've been with us for a few months, years, or a decade or more. Last week  my friend Kelly said goodbye to her beloved shitzu, Leeto. She had Leeto for twelve years and that little dog had been through a lot. She had lost her eyesight when she was just a puppy (due to a tragic fall). Leeto learnt to adapt to blindness, and relied on her other senses to guide her. She moved from Canada to Cayman, not once but twice in her twelve years. Enduring drastic weather changes, (which can be very hard on a dog) and the stress of air plane travel (also very trying for a dog). Leeto endured through all of this, and much more, but last week she suddenly started showing some troubling signs. She started panting profusely and  having seizures. When Kelly rushed her dog to the vet they suspected a brain tumor. All of Kelly's research on Leeto's symptoms had confirmed this diagnosis. Now Kelly was stuck with a dilemma; fly Leeto to the United States for brain cancer treatment, or put Leeto down. The cost of the treatments would be around $10,000, not to mention the flight to the US and accommodations (there are no vets in Cayman that treat cancer). Kelly had to ask herself: Am I keeping Leeto alive for her benefit , or mine?  Tough question. After hours of deliberating, and speaking to other dog owners that have been through similar experiences, Kelly had to make a decision. Leeto was in pain, and time was of the essence. Kelly decided the only humane decision was to let her go. On January 23rd Leeto passed away peacefully, gone forever, but never forgotten. To anyone that has ever had to say goodbye to their pet my heart goes out to you, because even though having a dog is not our whole lives, they make our lives whole.
