Roxy and the Iguana: A Fable
I didn't raise my dog to be a hunter, trust me. I think it's just in her breed. She will chase anything that moves: lizards, iguanas, snakes, chickens, and cats (cats being her animal of choice). Has she caught every animal off that list, most of these catches have ended in tragedy or comedy (sometimes both). I'll share a tale with you now in the form of a fable - can you spot the moral?
Fables: Short stories that usually involve animals that teach a moral lesson.
Roxy and the Iguana
Once there was a territorial brown and white spotted dog named Roxy. Roxy loved playing in her backyard. Roxy felt like she was the queen of her territory, and she didn't like anyone coming in to her yard without her permission. Every animal in the neighborhood was afraid of Roxy because she would bark and growl when they came close to her yard. No one ever came to visit Roxy because they were afraid of her loud barking. Because no one ever came to visit Roxy, it made her very lonely and sad. Why doesn't anyone ever want to come play with me? thought Roxy. I'm fun, and I've got this big backyard that's great for playing. One day when Roxy was out in her yard playing by herself chasing a ball around, she spotted an iguana in a tree above her. "What are you doing in my yard?" barked Roxy. the iguana replied, "I'm just chilling in the treetop soaking up the sun, I promise I won't bother you."
"Well I didn't invite you here, and you showed up without being invited so you're not welcome!" declared Roxy showing her teeth to the iguana. The iguana wanted to stay and soak up the warmth in the yard so he asked Roxy if she wanted to play ball. Roxy, although annoyed at the iguana for not asking permission to enter her yard was grateful to have a friend to play ball with. They played all afternoon till both of them fell asleep under the hot tropical sun. When they woke up from their afternoon nap the iguana said to Roxy, "See you're not as scary as everyone in the neighborhood says you are, why do you always bark when anyone comes around?"
Roxy replied, "I don't know, I guess I'm just a little bit scared, a little bit excited, and a little bit shy."
The iguana went back home and told all the neighborhood animals that Roxy was really a sweet and gentle dog after all, and that she wasn't someone they should be afraid of. From then on, all the neighborhood animals came to play with Roxy and learnt that when she barked or growled at them that she really didn't mean it.
Roxy and the Snake

My dogs do the same thing! Sometimes it annoys me but then others I think how the green iguanas are over populating the island.
