CARE 5 K Dog Walk/Run
Last weekend I participated in the CARE annual dog 5 k walk/run to support their fight against the ill-treatment , cruelty, and suffering to all domestic animals here in the Cayman Islands. I have to admit I was a little apprehensive at first when my friend Jenn asked me and Roxy to come. My dog just gets so excited around crowds of people and other dogs that I wasn't sure if I would spend the entire time being dragged around by her. I contacted my "go to" dog expert friend, Julie Leslie who assured me if I put Roxy in a harness instead of her regular collar, that she would do just fine. So I bought Roxy a harness and it was a GAME CHANGER. Now when Roxy tried to pull and drag me the harness (which clips onto the leash right under her chest) causes her to turn towards me and she can't drag or pull me. So, armed with my new walking harness I agreed to do the walk/run (which at 7 am on a Sunday morning ended up being mostly a walk with a few slight jogging intervals). When my alarm when off at 5:30 a.m last Sunday part of me was considering cancelling the event as Roxy and I lay wrapped up in our fluffy blankets. I knew I couldn't bail on my friend Jenn and her dog Precious, plus this was a great charity event and I wanted to go out and show my support. We arrived at 6 a.m.to register and the walk started at 7 a.m. Roxy was going up to every dog and person wagging her tail and greeting them. She was so excited she started whining, needless to say she got a lot of attention. There were probably at least 100 or more dogs, and that harness worked like a charm! I highly recommend a harness if you have a dog that likes to pull when they're on a lead. Roxy was a champ! We waited till most of the dogs went by, and then we started the walk. It took just under an hour and a half because of all the pit stops for water, snacks, and sniffs. I'm so glad I went, Roxy had a blast (and slept most of the day afterwards). Below are some pics from the event, and we even got a shout out and photo in the Cayman Reporter (see the link below). I've also included the link to the CARE website so you can see what they're all about, and all the wonderful things they do for animals.
