A Dog's Purpose- Movie Review
My husband bought this book for me a few months ago knowing that I would like it. Unfortunately as a high school English teacher the only thing I get to read during the school year are student papers, short stories from our school textbooks, and novels for school. So I'm a little embarrassed to admit that after a month of having the book I believe I'm on page 19! So I did what most self respecting English teachers would NEVER do; I watched the movie first (the book will have to wait till summer break). Here is my brief review on this heartwarming little film.
****Spoiler Alert*****
A Dog's Purpose came out at the beginning of 2017 and although not a box office hit nor critically acclaimed, I thoroughly enjoyed this family flick. Based on the best selling novel by W. Bruce Cameron the movie is written from the point of view of the main character, Bailey (the dog). This is where a lot of the comedy of the film from comes. The perspective of the dog not only gives us a creative and unique way to understand the world, but it also allowed the director (Lasse Hallstrom) to shoot the scenes from the viewpoint of Bailey. The basic premise of the story (without giving too much of the plot away) is there's a dog named Bailey who is raised by a boy named Ethan. The two become best buddies and grow up together. When Ethan goes away to college Bailey falls sick and has to be put down. Bailey is then reincarnated as a female German Shepherd named Ellie. Bailey (now Ellie) still retains all the memories from his former life but is now in a completely new life with a new purpose (a police dog). The dog goes through two more lives throughout the movie, each one as a different breed of dog, and a different purpose. Till finally the story comes full circle with a predictable but nonetheless enjoyable reunion with Ethan. Be forewarned, this story is not all smiles and giggles, there is plenty of drama and some serious issue are addressed (alcoholism, domestic violence, lost love, and animal cruelty to name a few). There are also plenty of laughs as well. One minute I'd be laughing, and the next I was tearing up, so be prepared for an emotional roller coaster. I'd give this movie a solid 6.5/10. A Dog's Purpose left me wanting to rush home and smother my dog with hugs and kisses. It really leaves you appreciating what dogs bring to our lives.
